Job Description

Job title: Senior Analytical Chemist - Polymers
Job type: Permanent
Location: Essex / Hertfordshire border
Salary: £30,000 - £35,000 / year + comprehensive company benefits package

- My client is a leading developer / manufacturer of polymer-based products
- They have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Analytical Chemist (ideally
operating at a senior level in order to deputise for the analytical manager when
required)

Job requirements:

- Coordinate technical work programs associated with multiple projects with
responsibility for project management and delivery of technical objectives
- Develop a detailed understanding of specific technical areas and apply this
knowledge effectively to the organisation
- Work closely with a team of other technical staff and have contact with various
internal and external customers
- Offer improvements / efficiencies in current methodologies and instrumentation
- Able to deputise for the analytical manager when required

Key responsibilities / accountabilities:

- Take day to day responsibility for laboratory safety and ensure that all
personnel act in accordance with company's SHE directives
- Plan, deliver and administer analytical projects and requests
- Responsible for the development of new analytical methods
- Provide expert analytical support to Operations and Customers related to the
chemistry, processing and applications of company products
- Support the development and training of laboratory personnel
- Ensure high levels of maintenance / calibration of GC, GC-MS, HPLC and FTIR
equipment in the analytical laboratory
- Ensure compliance with companies Health and Safety programs

Additional responsibilities:

- Lead lab staff to ensure a high quality of day-to-day work output
- Periodic supervision of a direct report (Lab Technician)
- Opportunity to play a lead role in implementation of ISO 17025 accreditation
- Other work as deemed necessary by the lab manager to aid in the functioning of
the lab

Education / experience required:

- Minimum of a BSc in Chemistry (Ideally with a significant analytical
component)
- Substantial previous / relevant work experience (preferably in polymer
testing)
- Experience in method development using GC-MS and HPLC
- Knowledge of the following techniques: GC-MS, HPLC, pyrolysis,
thermal desorption and headspace
- Some experience of ISO 10725 environment
- Knowledge of the following techniques is preferred: FT-IR, GPC (gel permeation
chromatography) with viscometery, RI and light scattering detectors, micro
chamber, GC-FID, purge and trap and DSC (differential scanning calorimetry)
